On Saturday, September 7th, an event titled Operation Do Ask, Do Tell: Keeping Veterans and Service Members Healthy will be held at Jesse Brown VA Medical Center, 820 S. Damen Avenue, Chicago, IL 60612. This event is a collaboration between Edward Hines, Jr. VA Hospital; Captain James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center; and Jesse Brown VA Medical Center. The planning committee also includes many Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT)-focused organizations.
The purpose of the day-long event is to increase awareness of concerns for LGBT Veterans, and provide information on resources for LGBT Veterans, including VA Healthcare. The target audience is active duty military, Veterans, the community, health care staff, friends, and allies. Several topics will be covered throughout the day, including general LGBT health, transitioning home, benefits, and how to advocate for your health.
The event will feature a speaker panel of Veterans who receive VA healthcare and an exhibit area showcasing several community organizations. Army Major Steve M. Snyder-Hill will serve as keynote speaker for this event. Mr. Snyder-Hill is an Iraq war Veteran and advocate for equality.
The event is scheduled to take place from 9:00am – 4:00pm, and it is free to attend. Free parking is available, and Jesse Brown is also available by public transportation.
