SUMMARY:RTW VET CENTER BUILDING DRIVE FUNDRAISER
DESCRIPTION:About the Purpose \nThe RTW Veteran Center is a 501(c)(3) non-for-profit that has been open since February of 2011 running twelve programs to improve the local community. The biggest among its many programs is its healthy soup kitchen which serves breakfast\, lunch\, and dinner seven days a week including holidays. In 2013 the center served over 50\,000 free meals to Chicago’s homeless veterans and others. The center also provides free clothes\, housing and housing placement\, job placement & training\, operates a free computer lab\, and has two sustainable gardens that provide fresh produce to the community. The center also operates a Young Soldiers Leadership Program as a part of its Gang Intervention Initiative. \n“The RTW Veteran Center is not a part of the Veterans Administration. It is a seperate non-for-profit that operates on a 100% volunteer staff financed by contributions from supporters like you.” \nThis fundraiser was created to pay off the building. In order to keep offering our services and helping the local community\, the RTW Veteran Center needs to secure the building and fully pay off the mortgage. DESCRIPTION:The ceremony will once again take place just inside Gate 0 of Soldier Field in front of the Doughboy statue. Along the wall are benches to provide seating and moments of reflection. The benches contain notable quotations regarding the efforts of those who serve our country. Actual Military Medals of Honor representing the various branches of the armed forces are cast into the backrests.\nSoldier Field was named as such at the request of Gold Star Mothers to honor those men lost in World War I. The Doughboy statue\, originally placed in Garfield Park\, was restored and installed in Soldier Field as part of the stadium renovation. Doughboy is an informal term for a member of the United States Army or Marine Corps\, especially members of the American Expeditionary Forces in World War I.\nVeterans Day is the one day set aside to thank and honor living veterans who have served honorably in the military in wartime and peacetime. Originally known as Armistice Day and so declared by President Woodrow Wilson\, it was created to mark the signing of the Armistice which ended World War I. DESCRIPTION:74th Annual Veterans Dinner\nWinnebago County Veterans Association\, Veterans Memorial Hall\,\nCliffbreakers 700 West Riverside Blvd Rockford IL\nFriday November 7th 2014 5:30 PM \nThe Veterans Dinner has been a tradition in Rockford for 74 years. It has brought together for one evening people from the government sector\, people from the private sector and Veterans from all walks of life to honor the Veterans in our community. \nThe keynote speaker for the evening will be Joseph L. Galloway\, who co-authored with Lt. Gen. (ret) Hal Moore the national best seller We Were Soldiers Once and Young\, which was made into the critically acclaimed movie We Were Soldiers starring Mel Gibson. Joseph L. Galloway was one of America’s premier war and foreign correspondents for half a century. During the course of 15 years of foreign postings—including assignments in Japan\, Indonesia\, India\, Singapore and three years as UPI bureau chief in Moscow in the former Soviet Union–Galloway served four tours as a war correspondent in Vietnam and also covered the 1971 India-Pakistan War and half a dozen other combat operations. Last year Military History magazine polled 50 leading historians to choose the Ten Greatest Books Ever Written on War. We Were Soldiers Once…and Young was among those ten books. \nWhy: On June 1\, 1954\, November 11th was designated as Veterans Day to all who served\, past\, present and future. Seventy-seven years ago on August 13\, 1937\, a group of men in Rockford known as the Ex-Servicemen’s Organization founded the Veterans Day Banquet hosting the first dinner on Armistice Day\, November 11\, 1938 at the Bethesda Covenant Church. The keynote speaker was Charles G. Seidel. In 1939 a second Armistice Day Banquet was held at First Lutheran Church\, with Dr. J. Oliver Buswel\, President of Wheaton College as keynote speaker. \nIn 1939\, the organizations name was changed from “Post of Ex-Service Men” to a “Post of War Service Men.” In 1944 Daniel Post was accepted into the American Legion and became Post #864. The American Legion Daniel Post #864 sponsored the banquet until 1998 when the Winnebago County Veterans Association took the responsibility to preserve continuity of the banquets honoring all veterans. The banquet has been held each year to honor veterans who served in the military of our country. \nSocial hour and cocktails will begin at 5:30 pm and dinner will be served at 7:00 pm. The Veterans Dinner Program will follow dinner. This year we will be offering a single entree featuring Turkey. Tickets are available at a cost of $250 per table of 8 or $35 each.
