JESSE BROWN VA MEDICAL CENTER INVITES VETERANS TO
A FREE HEPATITIS C SCREENING PROGRAM

TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 4TH, 2014 – 9:00AM TO 4:00PM JESSE BROWN VA MEDICAL CENTER

Hepatitis C is a growing public health crisis for Veterans, largely because the vast majority of infected individuals are unaware they have the virus.

Damen Pavillion, Second Floor Conference Room

Veterans MUST bring VA ID and/or DD214 form and be born between 1945 and 1965 to be eligible.

FOR THIS DAY ONLY, a rapid test will be provided by the
American Liver Foundation Great Lakes Division and results will be available within 20-60 minutes.
*Refreshments and other screening tests (including blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol) will be available while waiting*

THE CDC RECOMMENDS HEPATITIS C SCREENING FOR ALL INDIVIDUALS WHO WERE BORN BETWEEN 1945 AND 1965

FACTS ABOUT THE HEPATITIS C VIRUS

  •  Up to 75% of people do not realize they are infected by Hepatitis C
  • Hepatitis C is a virus that infects the liver
  •  Hepatitis C is transmitted or spread when blood from a Hepatitis C-infected person enters the bloodstream of someone who is not infected
  • Veterans have been identified as a high risk group
  • Most people do not know they have Hepatitis C because the symptoms such as fatigue and achiness are not specific
  • Untreated Hepatitis C can lead to liver damage, cirrhosis, liver cancer, and liver transplants
  • Hepatitis C is curable

WHAT IS THE HEPATITIS C SCREENING PROCESS?
1. Registration to confirm you meet the criteria
2. SIMPLE TEST – A fingerstick to get a drop of blood will be performed by a healthcare professional
3. Results will be available after a short wait
4. Light refreshments and other health screenings will be available while you wait for your test results
5. A professional counselor will share your results with you in a confidential setting
6. Based on your results, you will be advised of your next steps
